Menopause and Peel Treatments in Septermber

Attention all graduates and practicing professionals, Trish Green returns in September to teach more advanced training courses. Mark your calendar now - you don't want to miss it! The response to Trish's classes has been amazing. Everything she teaches is actionable and guaranteed to increase your profits.  Here are the dates:
Understanding Menopause
September 16 & 17, 9am-5pm
Help Your Clients Navigate This Important Life Change
Menopause is as individual as a thumbprint; no two women experience it alike. Some scarcely register any physical change while others are bombarded with inexplicable symptoms. As we reach menopause the three primary hormones that have kept our body well in terms of the structure of our skin, our physical body, and our emotional wellness, begin to fluctuate wildly. This class will take you on a menopausal journey that will look at the nature of these changes. Doctors of natural medicine have identified 12 specific groups of menopausal women - learn how to recognize them, recommend correct skin care protocols and incorporate a complete holistic approach for their well-being. Learn natural remedies such as essential oils, Bach Flower remedies, Herbal Tinctures and Supplements to assist in the treatment of symptoms.

Peel Treatments & Techniques
Uncover the Inner Glow
September 18, 9am-5pm
You'll be amazed by the results of this special formula peel and the income potential it represents for you.

Emails will be sent out with course information - be sure you are signed up to receive our email and newsletters.

Connie Devine Celebrates 10 Years

New Fairfield native, Connie Devine, celebrates her tenth anniversary as an aesthetician this June and the time, she says, has just flown by! For 8 of those 10 years she has provided skin care and beauty services at the Copper Lily Salon & Day Retreat in Wilmington, NC. Connie’s success results from the fact that skin care is as much a passion for her as her career. She credits the training she received at the IAAS for lighting that passion. While visiting Wilmington, NC two years after graduation, Connie fell in love with that community and immediately moved there. This resulted in her doing what she loves in a place where she loves living.

“I tell everyone how rewarding being an Aesthetician is,” Connie states. She first learned of aesthetics as a career option when she was 21 years old and visited the IAAS as a client. “A friend of mine was getting married and she took all her bridesmaids to IAAS. I had never had a facial before and didn't know what to expect. Half way through the facial I remember asking the student aesthetician if this was going to be what she’d be doing for a living? When she answered "yes,” my life focus changed.” As a corporate secretary at the time, Devine had a great job with all the perks one could want in a career. What she didn’t have was a job she enjoyed. The student aesthetician at IAAS made her feel so good she remembers saying to herself, "I want to make people feel this good and knew then, that's what I wanted to do.”

Devine continued to be a secretary for ten more years, all the while thinking, “I could continue being a secretary and be miserable and not feel like I make a difference, or I could take a leap of faith and follow my heart.”  When she finally worked up the courage to switch careers, she enrolled in the night program at IAAS while continuing to work. Once graduated, she dedicated herself exclusively to her new career.

“I enjoy everything that I do and especially the connection with women. Women need to take care of one another and encourage each other to be the best that we can be. The healing aspects of my career make me feel as good as it does my clients,” Devine states. “It means so much to me that I am able to make others feel good about themselves.”

The training she received at IAAS has had a HUGE impact on her career. She realizes that the structure of this dedicated program forced her to learn all the important nuances of the trade that make her excel at what she does.  “Not a day has gone by in 10 years that I have not thought of what I learned while studying at IAAS.”  She also knows that to remain successful “you have to keep your passion about what you do, without getting burned out.”  Her prescription for this is to practice what you preach and take time to recharge by getting facials yourself, “everything we promote to our clients is just as important for ourselves. It makes us better aestheticians when we recharge.”

At the North Carolina spa, Connie offers numerous types of facials which she customizes to the needs and interests of her clients. The facials offered include long, short, hydrating, deep cleansing, microdermabrasion and natural fruit peels.  Additional services include lash & brow tints, Brazilian waxing, and Alexandria sugaring (another method of hair removal). As if offering facials is not relaxing enough, Connie is also a certified reflexologist and incorporates those relaxation techniques into her services.

Asthetics - The Management Approach

Nancy Rinaldi chose to become an aesthetician at a time when it was not a common career choice. To give you an idea of how far back that was, she researched skin care schools using the yellow pages! After doing her homework, Nancy chose to study at IAAS because the curriculum was the most thorough and offered her the best training. She worked as an office administrator to help pay the bills while going to school.

Unlike most people who attend IAAS, Nancy’s plan was not to be a hands-on technician but rather to own and manage a salon. As soon as she graduated, despite the advice of friends and advisors, Nancy set up her own business.

Quickly Nancy learned the trials of business ownership including finding and keeping good aestheticians and staff. In addition, she also functioned as accountant, bookkeeper, receptionist, therapist, marketing director, and more. After eight years, she decided she wanted to return to just managing a business so she sold her salon and sought new opportunities.

Her new challenge was to become managing aesthetician for a Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery practice. After ten years of managing someone else’s practice, she decided to once again open her own business offering services based on a combination of skin care training and that which she learned while working with the surgeons. Her practice, called A Fine Line Medical Skin Care, provides goal orientated corrective skin care treatments. In addition, she travels the country as a national educator for SkinCeuticals, the country's leading medical skin care and chemical peel company.

When asked why aesthetics is her chosen profession, Nancy says, “I like helping people feel good about themselves.” She adds that having her own business gives her the flexibility and independence that results from working for yourself. Why someone should go into aesthetics, Nancy says, "do it because you are passionate about helping people feel and look good.” To be most effective, you have to start with a sound foundation, like training at IAAS. It is an investment in the quality of the rest of your life.

The Value of Great Training

Every graduate who leaves IAAS comments on the in-depth training they receive while here. Graduate Combines a Passion for Beauty and Fashion

New York's "Brow Goddess" Gina Daddona
shapes a clients brows.
New Milford, CT native Gina Daddona attended IAAS in 1993. After graduating from college with a degree in fashion, she began working in retail selling beauty products but wanted to somehow combine her interests of beauty and fashion. To do so successfully, she knew she needed in depth training in the beauty industry and that is what led her to the Institute of Aesthetic Arts & Sciences.

Upon completion of her studies at IAAS, Gina first took a job doing makeup and after that as an aesthetician in a salon. It wasn’t until she found a position in which she could combine both that she began to flourish. Living in New York and eventually getting more involved in fashion had always been her objective, so after a time she moved to New York and found work at a salon doing both skin care and makeup. Through networking and perseverance, she found a position at a top celebrity salon doing makeup with a focus on brow shaping. There she met Martha Stewart who hired her to do her makeup for tv appearances.

Gina continues to help celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Emmy Rossum, and Maria Shriver prep for tv, editorial and red carpet events along with many others. After several years of freelance and other salon work, she eventually ended up at the renowned Stephen Knoll Salon where she offers makeup applications and lessons, and of course brow shaping.

Actress Emmy Rossum had Gina apply
her makeup for a red carpet event.
After many years she has really honed her eyebrow shaping skills - and in the past year was recognized by CBS and Allure Magazine as the go-to person for eyebrow shaping and makeup. Gina prefers tweezing and trimming (for the precision) and showing women how they can use makeup to really perfect their eyebrows as needed.

Gina likes the steady home base of a salon, a regular clientele (as well as celebrities) and the team dynamic. She is able to freelance on the side which includes being part of a team working backstage during fashion week twice a year (thrilling for a fashion major) (see fashion week blog posting) and doing some work with Dior cosmetics for VIP clients. She has also had the opportunity to travel with teams to Beijing, China and Cannes, France among other places for shows and events.

When asked if she has any advice for someone pursuing a career in makeup, Gina says, "I recommend lots of practice (on all skin tones, ages, and face shapes), knowing your industry and the people in it, finding established artists to assist, observing, listening, always learning, being professional, prepared, flexible, creative, business minded, and on time.  Showcase your work, be proactive and go after the jobs you want.”

Gina credits the training she received at IAAS as being the starting point of this wonderful life journey she is on. “After working all these years,” she says, “I know I am very fortunate to have initially trained at such a top notch facility and I am very appreciative. I loved it there, have such fond memories, it was everything I thought it would be and more. IAAS certainly got me on my way to being able to work as a creative artist which is what I love most about my job."

Client Celebrates Improved Skin

"I absolutely love IAAS, and so does my skin. I have tons of allergies, and asthma, and my face is usually very red in my T zone. Doctors and so-called "beauty consultants" for years had told me it was rosacea. But under the direction of Lori and Julie at IAAS, I recently started using Eve Taylor Essential Oil #1 for redness due to allergies, along with my YonKa products. I just have one thing to say: 'hallelujah!!' The redness has faded significantly. Every morning I get up, look in the mirror, and literally gasp in surprise! I just can't believe how "normal" and clear my skin looks. It's not just the YonKa products (which are incredible) or the Eve Taylor Essential Oils (which are almost miraculous). I depend on the expertise and the compassionate care of the incredibly knowledgeable people at IAAS. I literally don't know what I'd do without them.”

Aromatherapy Offerings Expanded

Aromatherapy, the use of “aromatic oils in a therapeutic manner,” can be traced back to first being used in Egypt in 3000 BC. Essential oils, if used correctly, can help both enhance and improve the overall well being of a person both physically and emotionally - helping to lift depression and soothe nerves.

Essential oils have numerous applications. They can be used in massage - one of the oldest and most beneficial uses of essential oils when blended correctly. In baths, compresses, or in a diffuser or vaporizer. To get the most benefit from using essential oils it is vital that the best quality oils are used.

IAAS has added Eve Taylor essential oils to its curriculum and now offers them for sale and as an enhancement to their menu of client services. Both clients and staff enjoy the benefits of these amazing oils.
